Spangler, the Bees' powerfully built 250-pound heavyweight, beat Sam Stewart of Fieldale-Collinsville 9-7 in Saturday evening's final match to put Brookville over the top for its third-straight regional crown.
The Bees had three champions and two runners-up to edge Martinsville 177-173 1/2. William Byrd was a distant third with 124 points.
The Bulldogs, who will send eight wrestlers to the state tournament at Liberty University on Friday and Saturday, took an early lead on Brookville once the championship round started, but could not hold it.
With Martinsville leading with two bouts to go, Jeremiah Scott of Brookville pinned the Bulldogs' Mark Ivey at 1:42 to set up Spangler's heroics.
"We had two matches to do it and came up a little short," Martinsville coach Spencer Chang said. "I'm still proud of our guys."
Spangler said he entered that last match with an uncluttered mind.
"It's a pressure situation, but that's sports and that's life," he said. "If you can handle it here, you can handle it in college or anywhere else."
Martinsville got off to a splendid start when Stephen Foger pinned Brookville's Jon Booth at 3:19. It was the first time in three tries Foger had beaten Booth, who represented the only losses in Foger's season.
Brookville's Jonathan Thomas got the Bees' first victory in the finals when he stopped William Byrd's Mark Andrews 6-4 at 125.
Luqman Wade, Salem's 112-pounder, dominated his match against James Archer of Appomattox and won 6-1.
"I tried to do what I'm good at, which is stay on my feet and ride him," said Wade (25-2). "I thought I had him the whole way, as long as I didn't make a mental error."
Northside 130-pounder Tony Garland (28-1) defeated Jefferson Forest's Eddie Eldridge 14-4.
A similarly lopsided bout was staged between Jefferson Forest's Kenny Clubb and Alleghany's Willie Kimberlin at 135. Clubb rolled to a 15-6 victory.
