MEATPACKER OFFERS TO MEET GUIDELINES

Smithfield Foods Inc. will try to meet state pollution discharge guidelines, provided the state grants a four-month extension so the meatpacker can continue researching waste-water treatment options, company officials said.

Company officials also said Friday that Smithfield Foods will drop its legal challenge of the state's pollution guideline.

In 1990, the state ordered a 95 percent phosphorus reduction in the 3 million gallons of waste water discharged daily from the company's two Smithfield plants.

Robert Manly, a company executive vice president, said the meatpacker will tell the state by June 15 how it intends to comply with the guideline. - Associated Press
