TECH DIRECTOR WILL PARTICIPATE IN N.Y. SYMPOSIUM

Dr. Craig A. Rogers, director of the Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures at Virginia Tech, will discuss "smart materials" Thursday at a New York symposium called "Smart Bricks, Useful Trash and Elastic Chairs: Reinventing the Material World."

"Materials are being designed and engineered to mimic biological organisms," Rogers said. Metals, plastics and other inert materials are being endowed with the capacity of memory, movement and responsiveness.

For example, a window might automatically change its opacity in response to light, rendering blinds and curtains obsolete.

The symposium is organized by the Cooper-Hewitt Museum.
