SUTHERLAND, BENJAMIN R.

PENHOOK - Mr. Benjamin Rucker Sutherland, age 92, died Saturday, February 16, in a local nursing home. He was preceded in death by a son, Benjamin Chapman Sutherland. He was a retired mail carrier and attended V.P.I. for four years, leaving to enter the Army in World War I. He was a member of the Penhook United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent for over 30 years. He was also a former member of the Franklin County Planning Commission and was an aircraft pilot. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Belle Dudley Sutherland; one daughter, Mrs. John (Mary Frances) Harvell, Lynchburg; one son, David Anthony Sutherland, Penhook; one sister, Mrs. Maude Hudson, Salem; two grandchildren, Ann Maddox, Elon, Va.; John Benjamin Harvell, Lynchburg; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Penhook United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edward P. McClain officiating. Interment will follow in Northfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 noon Tuesday until service time. Arrangements by Lynch Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.
