ODAC STREAK ON LINE FOR ROANOKE

Since it first became eligible for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball tournament in 1981, Roanoke College has never failed to make it to at least the semifinal round.

The sixth-seeded Maroons (13-12 overall, 6-10 in the ODAC) try to continue that streak Tuesday in the 1991 men's ODAC Tournament at third-seeded Hampden-Sydney (20-5, 12-4).

"We match up with them fairly well," said Roanoke coach Page Moir, whose team lost both regular-season games to Hampden-Sydney. "They're a quality team. It's going to be awful tough, but we're going to have our opportunity.

"To win a championship, you've got to beat good teams along the way. It doesn't matter whether you play them first, second or third."

In the other first-round games Tuesday, top-seeded and defending champion Randolph-Macon (22-2, 15-1) plays host to eighth-seeded Lynchburg (8-17, 4-12); seventh-seeded Bridgewater (12-13, 5-11) travels to second-seeded Emory & Henry (22-3, 13-3); and fourth-seeded Washington and Lee (12-13, 7-9) plays host to fifth-seeded Virginia Wesleyan (11-13, 7-9).

In women's games tonight, seventh-seeded Hollins College (7-13, 7-11) is host to 10th-seeded Randolph-Macon Woman's College (0-18, 0-17) tonight and Mary Baldwin (2-16, 2-16) travels to Eastern Mennonite (5-16, 5-13) for playoff games to see which will advance to Wednesday's first round.

Top-seeded Roanoke College (24-1, 18-0), the ninth-ranked women's team in Division III, will play the winner of the Eastern Mennonite-Mary Baldwin game, and the Hollins-RMWC winner travels to second-seeded and defending tournament champion Bridgewater (18-7, 15-2).

In the other games, third-seeded Lynchburg (15-8, 12-6) plays host to Emory & Henry (10-14, 9-9) and fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon (11-12, 10-8) travels to Virginia Wesleyan (12-13, 11-7).

The men's and women's semifinals will be played Friday at the Salem Civic Center. The women's games are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m., and the men play at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. The finals are Saturday the civic center with the women tipping off at 6:30 p.m. to be followed by the men's title game at 8:30.

In the Dixie Conference men's tournament beginning Wednesday, Ferrum College (15-9, 7-3) won a coin flip over Averett (12-13, 7-3) to get a bye into Friday's semifinals at North Carolina Wesleyan.

The Panthers will play the winner of Averett's game against Methodist (7-16, 1-9). Greensboro (10-15, 2-8) plays at North Carolina Wesleyan (7-17, 3-7) on Wednesday with the winner to play top-seeded Christopher Newport (21-4, 10-0).

The women's Dixie Tournament begins Tuesday with Methodist (12-9, 4-6) at Ferrum (8-16, 4-6) and Averett (0-23, 0-10) at North Carolina Wesleyan.
