WILLIAMSBURG WANTS NO PART OF `RACY' NOVEL

A New York publisher thought a "Pocahontas Day" in Williamsburg would be good publicity for a new book about the 17th century Indian woman.

The author could come to the restored 17th century town and be given a key to the city, the publisher suggested.

But the city fathers think the book takes a few liberties with history and have turned the publisher down.

Williamsburg did not exist when Pocahontas and Capt. John Smith were at Jamestown, said Mayor John Hodges. "And we don't have any keys."

Hodges questioned the historical content of "Pocahontas," to be published next month by Berkley Publishing. "The book is racy in some spots," he said.

Author Susan Donnell portrays Pocahontas and Smith as lovers at Jamestown and in London during a visit there with her husband, John Rolfe.

Hodges suggested the publishers contact James City County, where Jamestown is located.
