CHANNEL 10 SPORTSCASTER CHANGING HIS PROFESSION

Matt Pumo, a sportscaster at WSLS the past 3 1/2 years, is changing professions and stations while staying in Roanoke.

Pumo, a reporter and weekend anchor at Channel 10, is moving to WJPR (Channels 21/27) as an account executive in the sales department. Pumo's last anchor work for WSLS will be on Sunday's newscasts.

"Basically, it was a decision based on my working weekends for 3 1/2 years . . . and I wasn't getting any younger," said Pumo, 28, a Parma, Ohio, native. "There was a time when I thought I'd never get out of sports, and I've wanted to be a sports director, but it didn't work out.

"There used to be a time when I watched every sports event on TV that I possibly could. I can't do that any more."

Pumo will handle sales in Roanoke and the New River Valley, he said. He is not scheduled to work on WJPR sports telecasts, "although there is the potential for that in the future, certainly," said Robb Gray, WJPR's vice president and general manager.

WJPR airs Old Dominion Athletic Conference and high school sports shows, anchored by longtime Roanoke sportscaster Dave Ross - who also works in sales at Channels 21/27.

Pumo worked at stations in Dothan, Ala., and Bluefield, W.Va., before moving to Roanoke to work with sports director Greg Roberts. Pumo is a graduate of Tennessee-Martin.

Roberts' said WSLS sports part-time reporter Scott Rivers is a candidate for Pumo's vacancy, which will be advertised by the station.
