PITTSTON OFFERS STATE 500 ACRES FOR PRISON

Pittston Coal Corp. has expressed willingness to give 500 acres on Red Onion Mountain in Wise and Dickenson counties to the state as a prison site.

An environmental-impact study must be made before the site can be accepted, but state corrections officials have expressed interest in it unofficially for a 500-cell prison.

Local officials originally offered the site to federal officials for a prison, but neighboring Lee County got that facility.

Funding for the new state prison, wherever it is built, probably will not be sought until the 1992 legislative session.
