EXPERT: ALLIES CAN SURVIVE CHEMICALS

A Harvard University chemist who advises the U.S. military on chemical weapons criticized on Monday suggestions that Iraq's weapons might defeat American protective measures.

U.S. protective gear is the best in the world, and reports to the contrary could encourage Saddam Hussein to use chemical weapons, Matthew Meselson said.

"I would much rather be in the vicinity of an approaching Scud armed with a chemical warhead - if I had my U.S. protective equipment - than a Scud armed with an explosive warhead," he said.
