USAIR MUM ON REPORT OF ROANOKE LAYOFFS

USAir officials said Tuesday it may be "weeks, even months" before employees at the Roanoke Regional Airport and the airline's other bases learn the effect of systemwide layoffs announced last week.

The Arlington-based carrier said on May 2 it will eliminate two departures from Roanoke as part of a nationwide restructuring that will include furloughs, layoffs, early retirements and flight cancellations. The airline lost $454 million last year.

David Shipley, a USAir spokesman, said he could not confirm rumors that the airline may lay off a dozen part-time workers in Roanoke. He did say, however, that USAir plans to eliminate 1,300 customer-service agents as part of the cutbacks. - Staff report
