AFL-CIO LOWERS AIM ON HEALTH-CARE GOALS

AFL-CIO leaders struck a compromise on health-care reform Tuesday, endorsing national health insurance as a long-term goal but agreeing to push for more modest reforms for now.

The labor federation's executive council adopted a compromise that also calls for uniform reimbursement rates for hospitals and doctors and should allow labor leaders to present a united front once Congress starts debating health-care reform, union officials said.

It calls for an insurance pool, financed by employers who do not provide benefits, to provide coverage to the 37 million Americans who have no health insurance. - Associated Press
