GARDEN CLUB HEARS ABOUT BIRDS, BEES

Richard Fell, an entomology professor at Virginia Tech, discussed "Birds and Bees" at the February meeting of the Town and Country Garden Club.

Fell discussed honey as being the only sweetener people used for many years. He said it is still popular and estimated that there are approximately 7,000 to 8,000 beekeepers in Virginia today.

Plants that are favorites of bees include the red bud, apple, tulip, and dandelion.

In other business, it was decided that Edna Smith will receive an honorary membership award in appreciation for her many years of faithful club work.

Alice Hale installed new officers. They are: President Mary Cook, Vice President Jenny Viers, Treasurer Evelyn A. Sanders, secretary Mrs. B.C. Horne, historian Carlyle Gregory and Chaplain Alice Hale.

Judging Chairwoman Mrs. R.P. Hensley awarded Favroa with the yearly horticulture award and gave Horne the yearly artistic award.

Jenny Viers was the hostess for the February meeting. Hensley will be the hostess for the March meeting.
