CHANGES PROPOSED FOR ACC TOURNEY

The 1992 Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball tournament would add a fourth day and include opening-round games involving the bottom four teams, according to a plan recommended by athletic directors on Tuesday.

The new format would be designed to accommodate the entry of Florida State into the league in time for the 1991-92 basketball season.

The athletic directors made their recommendation to the full conference. A vote is expected at the next ACC meeting, scheduled for May 20-22. An earlier vote could be taken by mail, the conference said.

Under the proposal, Thursday's games at the Charlotte Coliseum would match the No. 6 seed against No. 9, and No. 7 against No. 8.

On Friday, the No. 4 seed would face No. 5; the winner of the game between Nos. 7 and 8 against No. 2; and the winner of the game between Nos. 6 and 9 against No. 3.

Whoever finished first in the regular season would receive a second-round bye.

Saturday's semifinals would match No. 1 against the winner of the game between No. 4 and No. 5, and the winners of the games involving the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. The championship game would be played Sunday.

The new format puts emphasis on regular-season play, the conference said, since the first-place regular-season team gets a bye into the semifinals. The bottom four teams would have to win four games to capture the title.
