HOLTON, PETZOLD HONORED

Washington and Lee senior Mike Holton and VMI junior Charlie Petzold have been selected to the District III GTE Academic All-America basketball team in voting by the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Monday.

Holton, a point guard from Indianapolis majoring in business administration/accounting, has a 3.86 grade-point average. He is a two-time member of the academic team. Holton is averaging 12.1 points per game this season and has scored more than 1,000 points in his career at W&L.

Petzold, a forward who played in 19 games for VMI before being sidelined by bone spurs in his heels, majors in civil engineering. He has a 3.436 GPA, which ranks first in his class in that curriculum. Petzold, from Kettering, Ohio, averaged 5.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.

Also on the team are Lynchburg College junior forward Daryle Dooms of Charlottesville, a management major with a 3.76 GPA; Roanoke native Russell Turner of Hampden-Sydney; guard Kerry Evert of Oglethorpe University in Atlanta; and David Wolf of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Petzold was the top vote-getter. The names of all the players announced Monday will appear on the ballot for the national team, to be announced March 7. - Staff report
