OIL SLICK SMALLER THAN FEARED, EXPERT SAYS

The Persian Gulf oil slick is much smaller than originally feared and allied attacks on Iraqi positions are believed to have caused up to 30 percent of it, officials said Tuesday.

Abdullah Dabbagh, director of research at the University of Petroleum and Minerals, said latest estimates based on satellite photography indicated 1.5 million barrels of crude had been spilled into the gulf.
