VIRGINIA WESLEYAN ELIMINATES GENERALS

Virginia Wesleyan defeated Washington and Lee 82-71 to eliminate the Generals in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday.

Virginia Wesleyan (12-13) took command early as Trevor Williams scored eight of the Marlins' first 12 points. Virginia Wesleyan stretched its lead to 14 in the first half before the Generals (12-14) rallied to cut the lead to 45-40 at the half.

The Marlins began the second period hot and led 56-44 before the Generals, with six seniors playing their final game, made a last gasp 20-11 run. Pat Gallavan's 3-pointer cut the Marlins' lead to 67-64 with 5:36 left, but Wesleyan hit enough free throws to ice the win.

Steve Weddle scored 17 points for the Marlins and Williams and Rick Chalk added 16 apiece. Ed Hart led the Generals with 21 points.

In other ODAC first-round games, former Cave Spring star David Kagey scored 26 points as Randolph-Macon (23-2) downed Lynchburg (8-18) 72-63 in Ashland. Lynchburg got 14 points from Daryle Dooms. Virginia Wesleyan plays Randolph-Macon at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Leon Hill scored 22 points and had four steals to lead home team Emory & Henry (23-3) to an 86-55 victory over Bridgewater (12-14). Craig McLaughlin scored 15 points for Emory & Henry, which will meet Hampden-Sydney on Friday.
