PULASKI COMES HOME, NIPS FLEMING

Strangers in their own gymnasium, Pulaski County's Cougars were reminded what it was like to play in the home white uniforms Tuesday night.

Evidently, the Cougars found the duds as comfortable as they beat William Fleming 80-77 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' high school basketball thriller that ended a two-game losing skid.

"We haven't played here since Jan. 15," Pulaski County coach Pat Burns said. "All we've done is stop in to wash the uniforms."

Living out of a suitcase hasn't been a glamorous business. Pulaski County went 2-4 on this latest swing.

The Cougars (9-11 overall, 2-5 district) stretched their advantage to nine points in the second half, but the Colonels (13-6, 4-2) proved to be hard to shake. That may not have been the case had the Cougars made some free throws.

Pulaski County went a not-so-hot 24-of-38 on free throws, missing eight in the final 4:45 alone.

"We shoot free throws well, or we have lately, especially our three perimeter people [point guard Kevin Alexander and wings Chris Burns and Shawn Burchett]," Pat Burns said. "We'll take that opportunity every time. We didn't shoot 'em tonight, though. We could have put it away big time."

Collectively, Alexander, Burns, and Burchett went 17-for-27 from the free-throw line.

The Colonels' four chances to tie in the last 43 seconds failed, including Champ Hubbard's 3-pointer at the horn.

"We didn't shoot well nor play well," said Fleming coach Burrall Paye, who spent his evening conferring frequently and not often cheerfully with the officiating crew.

Alexander, a left-hander who missed almost a month earlier in the season with a broken wrist, scored 25 points. Perry Beverly added 18, and Burns had 16.

Two of Fleming's three leading scorers fouled out, Dontel Arrington with 19 points and David Williams with 17. Terrell Milam had 18 points and four fouls. Carlos Rhodes, a sophomore, came off the bench to hit a couple of 3-pointers - part of his 12 points - as the Colonels were coming back.
