FAYED CHOOSES WINTHROP

Cave Spring's Mike Fayed, the leading boys' basketball scorer in the Roanoke Valley District, has committed to sign with Winthrop College of the Big South Conference.

Fayed chose Winthrop of Rock Hill, S.C., over VMI of the Southern Conference and Wofford, a Division II school.

Fayed is averaging 21.5 points a game and is the third-leading scorer in Timesland. He has 6.9 assists per game and is shooting 53.5 percent. He is second in free-throw shooting at 87.5 percent.

"Mike visited Winthrop last weekend and really liked the players and the facilities. He feels it will have the academic and basketball program that he's looking for," said Cave Spring coach Joe Davis.

Presbyterian and Campbell, another Big South school, also recruited Fayed. VMI had tried to get Fayed to sign last November, but he deferred in making his decision.
