KNIGHTS GIVE SHOTWELL NO. 400

James River clinched a first-place tie in the Piedmont District boys' high school basketball standings and gave coach John Shotwell his 400th victory by pounding Lexington 77-58 Tuesday night.

James River will play Covington in a playoff game to determine first place in the district. The site and date will be decided today.

Covington (14-6, 14-4) defeated Natural Bridge 72-66 Tuesday night to keep pace with the Knights.

Ryan Shotwell led the Knights (14-6, 14-4) with 20 points. Melvin Christian added 17, Derek Jones 14 and Greg Wilhelm 11. Jones sank four 3-pointers and Shotwell three.

James River outscored the Scarlet Hurricane 27-11 in the second quarter and led 46-23 at halftime.

Ethan Machado scored 18 points for Lexington (11-8, 9-8).

\ Covington 72 Natural Bridge 66 Adaryl Twitty scored 11 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to fuel a Cougars comeback in a victory over the Rockets that gave Covington a tie with James River for first place in the Pioneer District regular-season standings.

Neal Pressler had 18 points and Tony Jeter added 11 for Covington.

Senior guard Robert Thompson paced Natural Bridge (7-12, 7-10) with 23 points. Thompson had four assists to establish a school-season record of 116.

\ Alleghany 80 Salem 57 The Mountaineers rolled to a Blue Ridge District road victory over the Spartans as Darren and Todd Wheatley combined for 41 points.

Alleghany (13-7, 6-2) led by 12 points at halftime and put away the game in the fourth period. Darren Wheatley led all scorers with 24 points, including three 3-point baskets, and Todd Wheatley had 17.

The Spartans (6-13, 2-5) got 23 points from Jay Sandy.

Glenvar (11-7) missed 12 free throws in the first half, going 7-for-19, and shot 43 percent on free throws for the game. William Byrd (8-10) shot 73 percent from the line.

John Smith's 19 points led the Terriers, and Matt Reynolds added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Scott Wagstaff led Glenvar with 16.

Ray Brawley led Liberty with 18 points, and Corey Anderson and Benny Morgan had 10 each.

\ Patrick County 74 Tunstall 56 Jonathan Vaughn had 16 points and Scott Clifton added 14 as the Cougars upset the Trojans in a Piedmont District shocker.

The victory was the first of the season for Patrick County (1-18, 1-16). The Cougars had lost 63-46 at home in the first meeting with Tunstall (10-10, 9-8).

While the Cougars shot more than 50 percent, the Trojans struggled to find the basket, hitting only 19 of 64 shots.

Patrick County was 21-of-26 on free throws, compared to 14-of-25 for Tunstall.
