JEFFERSON FOREST STUNS ALTAVISTA

In a Seminole District upset Tuesday night, Jefferson Forest shocked Altavista, the state's eighth-ranked Group AA boys' basketball team, by scoring the last six points to win 75-69.

Kenny Johnson broke a tie at 69 for the Cavaliers (9-10 overall, 9-10 in the district) by hitting both shots on a bonus free-throw opportunity with 50 seconds left. After Altavista (15-4, 15-4) missed a shot, Keith Enslow made another two free throws for the Cavaliers.

Johnson and Bryan Jennings led Jefferson Forest with 18 points each.

Mike Graves had 18 points for the Colonels.

\ Bland 73 Giles 60 The Rockets outscored the Spartans 24-10 in the second quarter as they downed the Spartans and clinched the Mountain Empire District regular-season title.

Patrick Smith scored 23 points - including 12 in the second quarter - to lead Bland (15-2, 15-2). Travis Munsey chipped in 15 and Clinton Kegley 10.

Smith also grabbed 10 rebounds, and Bland outrebounded Giles 45-26 for the game.

Brent Rampy led Giles (5-12, 5-12) with 16 points, followed by Stacy Hutchinson with 11 and Jared Wilburn with 10.

\ Fort Chiswell 60 Shawsville 56 Kevin Tomlinson sank an 8-foot baseline jumper with 34 seconds to play to lift the Pioneers to the Mountain Empire District victory over the Shawnees.

After Tomlinson's basket gave Fort Chiswell a 57-56 lead, the Shawnees had two chances to go ahead or tie in the final 30 seconds, but turned over the ball on both trips down the floor.

Scott Lyons paced Fort Chiswell (14-4, 13-4) with 12 points.

Kenny Dow had 21 and Mike Wells 17 for Shawsville (11-8, 9-8).

Steve Gregory had 14 points and Mike Smith 13 as Christiansburg (10-9) wiped out a Graham lead by scoring 40 second-half points. Dave Lawson's 3-pointer with nine seconds left brought the G-Men (7-12) within three, but Todd Gowins' desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer went awry.

Vashon Fields led Graham with 26 points.

Narrows (4-13, 4-13) had the game's top scorer in Mason Bragg, with 21 points.

\ Auburn 77 Grayson County 70 Brian Sale scored 22 points as the Eagles upset the Blue Devils in Mountain Empire District play.

Grayson County started the second half on a 10-3 run to take a 41-40 lead, but the Eagles (7-12, 7-10) scored eight straight and never trailed.

Mike Foutz added 13 points, Jeff Chandler 11 and Todd Collins 10 for Auburn. Sale was 10-for-12 on free throws, and Foutz grabbed 11 rebounds.

Devin Floyd led all scorers with 25 points for the Blue Devils (12-7, 11-6). Bonner Satterwhite and Brian Worth added 11 each.
