`GOOD SAMARITAN' WINDS UP ROBBING MAN HE HELPED

A Roanoke man was hit in the head with a baseball bat and then robbed by a man who stopped to help him when he ran out of gas.

Cleveland Blair Thompson, 20, of Plantation Road, told police that he ran out of gas about 11 a.m. Tuesday at the rear of the Roanoke-Salem Plaza.

A man stopped and offered to help, Thompson told police. After driving to a relative's home to get money for gas, the two men returned to Thompson's car.

Thompson told police that as he was putting gas in his car, the man hit him in the face with a baseball bat. The man then took $15 from Thompson and fled.

Thompson, who was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for an eye injury, told police the man said he had recently been released from prison.
