HOLYCROSS' 40TH CELEBRATED (NOT AT TAXPAYERS' EXPENSE)

Pulaski Town Manager Don Holycross is celebrating two occasions this week - one of which prompted town officials to give him a surprise party after Tuesday night's Town Council meeting.

Under a banner in Mayor Gary Hancock's office, that repeated the phrase "Over the hill. . . ." Holycross cut a cake to celebrate his 40th birthday, which is on Friday.

Gifts included a tube of Poli-Grip, a bottle of Geritol (high-potency) and, more to his liking, a gift certificate for a meal at the Renaissance restaurant for him and his wife, Lori.

"Lest there be any confusion, I will point out that none of that was bought at taxpayers' expense," Hancock said.

Holycross' wife, a teacher, attended the surprise party and mentioned that they had celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary Monday, a town holiday because of Presidents Day.

"He had the day off and I went to work," she said. But she did receive some flowers at school from Holycross in honor of the occasion.

At least she assumes they were from her husband. There was no card.
