WOUNDED SHERIFF OUT OF HOSPITAL/ MAKES A PITCH FOR BULLETPROOF VESTS

Greene County Sheriff William Morris has left the hospital, 10 days after he was wounded in the neck and chest during a shootout.

Morris was released from the University of Virginia Hospital on Wednesday after he was struck by a shotgun blast Feb. 11 outside a home near Quinque when he and another deputy escorted a woman home after a domestic dispute.

Morris spoke through clenched teeth because his jaw, broken during the shootout, had been wired shut.

Morris said he hopes to persuade county supervisors to buy deputies bulletproof vests, and said he will change policies for officers answering domestic-dispute calls.

The woman, Arbutis Morris, last week asked deputies to escort her, although her husband, Edward Morris, had agreed to let her into the home to pick up personal belongings.

Edward Morris reportedly opened fire from inside the home, striking the sheriff. Morris then was shot and killed by Deputy Dean Fisch.
