BOND, LESTER R., DR.

Dr. Lester Ray Bond, age 61, of Hollyberry Acres, Gretna, died Thursday at his residence. He had been in declining health the past six months. Born December 2, 1929 in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Orbin H. Bond and Bessie Martin Bond. He was a family physician in Gretna for the past 34 years and served as medical examiner for 30 years. A graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School, he served a one year internship at Ohio State University and two years in SAC Air Force. He was an honorary member of the Gretna Rescue Squad and a member and past president of the Gretna Lions Club. A past member of the Gretna Jaycees, he received the U.S. Junior Chamber of Commerce distinguished service award. He also helped establish a library in Gretna. He was named the 1990 "Citizen of the Year" by The Merchants Association of Gretna. This past December, a committee established a " Dr. Lester Bond Christmas Stocking Fund" in his honor. Because he was unable to use the funds prior to his death, his family is maintaining the fund as the Lester R. Bond Memorial Fund. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Fisher Bond of Gretna; four sons, Dr. Michael L. Bond and Gerald Douglas Bond, both of Gretna; Nathan Patrick Bond of Philadelphia, Pa.; and Christopher Lynn Bond of Smithfield, N.C.; one daughter, Leslie Rae Bond King of Pulaski; three brothers, Dr. Glen Bond of Gretna, Dr. Lloyd Bond of Sacramento, Calif.; and Earnest O. Bond, Sr. of Roanoke; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Bernard Bond of Roanoke. The funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Gretna by the Rev. W.D. Lilly. Interment will be in Gretna Burial Park. The body is at the residence and will be taken to Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Saturday morning. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The family request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be sent to the Lester R. Bond Memorial Fund, c/o Crestar Bank, P.O. Box 477, Gretna, Va. 24557. Colbert-Moran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
