CHARGERS WIN A THRILLER IN 2 OT

Bath County avenged an earlier defeat by beating Glenvar 69-65 in double overtime on Thursday, in Pioneer District boys' basketball action.

The Chargers, who improved to 11-6 in the district, held the Highlanders (11-6) scoreless in the second overtime. The only points scored in the period were Lee Waldeck's two free throws with eight seconds left, which clinched the win, and Don Ryder's hoop with 55 seconds left that gave Bath County the lead.

Glenvar had smashed the Chargers 90-66 earlier in the season, but Bath led most of the way on Thursday.

Entering the fourth quarter the Chargers held a 52-43 lead. But Scott Wagstaff, Steve Ashworth and Scott Highberger led the Highlanders back, combining for 14 of Glenvar's 16 fourth-quarter points. Wagstaff gave the Highlanders the lead with 20 seconds in regulation, 59-57. But Tim Williams connected with 10 seconds left to force the first extra period.

Bath charged out and took a 65-59 lead on baskets by Waldeck, Keswick Phillips and Ryder. The Chargers, however, lost their head of steam on the free throw line. Williams, Chris Phillips and Ryder were unable to connect on three one-and-one situations and Glenvar battled back.

Wagstaff knocked in a basket with :41 seconds left and hit two free throws that tied the score sandwiched around a hoop by Chad Willis.
