DEVELOPMENT RATE HIGH ALONG NS LINES

Norfolk Southern Corp. said Thursday its industrial development department contributed a record $100.2 million to 1990 transportation revenues because of several major plant additions and expansions on its rail system.

Last year, 63 new industries - such as a new coal-fired power plant in Virginia and a new auto assembly plant in Avon Lake, Ohio - located on sites served by the Norfolk-based rail company. Another 27 businesses, including an auto assembly plant in Kentucky, expanded operations in 1990, accounting for NS's record year in development.

NS's Atlanta-based industrial development department, which accounted for $93 million in 1989 transportation revenues, works with state and local development officials to develop sites for businesses in need of rail service. The transportation company reported $606.2 million in net income last year. - Staff report
