ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP PLANS ALL-DAY BENEFIT CONCERT SUNDAY

The New River Valley Environmental Coalition will sponsor an all-day benefit concert at South Main Cafe in Blacksburg on Sunday.

The group was formed in November to educate people about local environmental issues, including land-use policies, scenic river designation and wildlife preservation.

The coalition represents about 50 members and eight organizations.

Tickets are $3 for adults and $1 for children under 12, and will be on sale at the door.

The afternoon segment will feature acoustic music for children and families.

Vegetarian food will be available from South Main Cafe's kitchen. That portion of the show will run from 2 p.m. to about 7 p.m.

Starting at 8 p.m., the show will turn electric with the sounds of several locally known rock 'n' roll bands.

Proceeds from the concert will go toward the New River Valley Environmental Coalition. Local bands playing during the afternoon will be:

> Idlewilde, original children's music.

The McKenzies, folk and swing for all ages.

Honk, a jazz saxophone combo making their debut performance. The group features five different kinds of saxophones.

'Round Midnight, a jazz quartet.

Riverboat Ramblers, the sounds of Dixieland jazz.

Starting at 8 p.m.:

Joe the Fireman, original ballads and post-punk pop.

Electric Woodshed, rock 'n' roll classics.

The Kind, psychedelic sounds of the '60s and '70s.
