MONTGOMERY COUNTY DOG WARDEN RESIGNS

Montgomery County's new chief dog warden resigned Thursday after being on the job for only a month.

No reason was given for the resignation of Mark Smoot, who was appointed by the Board of Supervisors in January.

Assistant County Administrator Pamela McCune said she had been told by County Attorney Roy Thorpe not to comment.

Smoot could not be reached Friday for comment.

Smoot, 39, had been named to replace former dog warden Muriel Graham, who retired last year after 22 years on the job.

Smoot, who lives in Vinton and has no telephone, had said in an interview earlier this month that he was looking forward to a long relationship with Montgomery County. He was featured in a New River Current story Feb. 9.
