DAY SCORES 38 IN RADFORD WIN

Doug Day tied a Big South Conference record with 38 points and the Highlanders wiped out UNC-Asheville 97-67 Saturday night in college basketball.

Day was 12-of-19 from the field, including 8-of-11 from 3-point range. The former Blacksburg High player nailed seven 3-pointers in the first half, finishing the first 20 minutes with 28 points. He added nine assists for the game.

In a 2-minute, 45-second stretch as the half wound down, Day scored 11 straight points to help the Highlanders (21-6 overall, 12-2 Big South) take a 51-31 halftime advantage.

Ron Shelburne made eight of nine field-goal attempts and added 16 points for Radford, which shot 59 percent (36-of-61) for the game.

"We played perhaps our best game of the season tonight," Radford coach Oliver Purnell said. "We played solid defense, rebounded the ball well, got our running game going and scored on transition. And then, of course, Doug went on his binge.

"Doug was feeling it tonight, and when he gets it going - when he hits his first couple of shots - he can really turn it on. Twenty-eight points and six assists is an awful lot of offense for one person to generate in a half.

"I had been a little concerned about the fact that we had not been coming out and playing well in the first half. But after tonight, I pronounce us well."

Brent Keck led UNC-Asheville (8-19, 4-10) with 20 points.

Radford's 21-6 record was an exact reversal of last season's regular-season record, and the best turnaround in Division I basketball this season. The Highlanders are the second-seeded team in the conference, and will face Charleston Southern in the first round of the tournament Thursday night in Anderson, S.C.
