Rescue crews, using wooden blocks and jacks, worked furiously to raise the car from atop the rider, whose red, white and blue motorcycle lay battered at the intersection of Church Avenue and Jefferson Street.
Police declined to identify the rider because his family had not been notified as of late Saturday. But Officer K.L. Sidwell said the rider was in stable condition and headed for surgery.
Police and witnesses said the car, driven by Adam Jessee, 19, of Roanoke, was making a left turn onto Church from the northbound lane of Jefferson when the motorcycle came screaming south on Jefferson, ran a red light and crashed into the turning car.
"All we seen was a black streak . . . and BAM!" said Rick Dudding, 30, of New Castle. "He hit that car right square in the fender. After it hit, we didn't see [the rider]. Then all we could see was legs under the car."
Jessee, appearing shaken, said: "When he hit was the only time I saw him. The only thing I know is, POW! That's all I saw. I thought I'd run into something in the road."
