HOKIES CAN'T BREAK FOOTBALL DATE

Virginia Tech's football team apparently will play at South Carolina in 1991 despite Tech's efforts to soften a rough schedule by getting out of the game.

Tech athletic director Dave Braine said Saturday that the game almost certainly will be played. That means the Hokies will play consecutive road games against West Virginia, South Carolina, Oklahoma and Florida State early next fall.

"I sure didn't want to [play it]," Braine said of the South Carolina game. "We'll continue to make attempts [to get out of the game] as long as we feel like it's feasible to do so. Right now, it doesn't look good."

Braine said Tech could not find a school to play South Carolina on the date of the scheduled game.
