MARTINSVILLE, CHRISTIANSBURG WRESTLERS WIN

While Grundy won its fifth consecutive Group AA wrestling title Saturday, some Timesland competitors had a successful tournament in the individual competition.

Martinsville's Lemart Stockton in the 119-pound division and Christiansburg's Tim Nininger at 103 won individual championships in impressive style.

Alleghany's Bobby Gillespie (140) and Carroll County's Chad Dillon (145) were runners-up.

Grundy had 184 1/2 points to outdistance the field. Park View-Sterling was second at 96 1/2, followed by Osbourn (95 1/2), York (89 1/2) and Orange (74 1/2). Sixth-place Martinsville was the highest-finishing Timesland team with 73 points.

Stockton joined his brother Stacy, who won the 130-pound title a year ago, as a state champion for the Bulldogs. Lemart Stockton pinned Grundy's Eric Kendrick just before the second period ended.

Earlier, Kendrick had taken brief one-point leads only to lose them as Stockton scored an escape and later a reversal.

"Kendrick is at the top of his game when he's on his feet," Martinsville coach Spencer Chang said. "I wasn't concerned as long as we could keep it close."

This was the second time this year Stockton has pinned Kendrick, but in the earlier meeting the Grundy wrestler had just made weight and wasn't ready for an opponent of Stockton's caliber.

"He's one of the best I've ever wrestled. I was concerned early, but I just kept going after him," Stockton said.

Nininger was third in the state last year and used his experience to win. He scored heavily early, including a near pin in the first period. When it was apparent he wouldn't get a pin, Nininger was content to ride out the match with a big lead that was cut by one point for stalling.

"I looked and saw his shoulder was up," said Nininger, who finished 29-0. "I thought I might get him. When I didn't, the stalling call didn't matter."

Dillon lost to Spotsylvania's Jimmy Asimacopoulos 6-4 on a last-second takedown that Carroll County coach Wayne Scott disputed. Dillon had a 4-3 lead with less than a minute to go, but was called for stalling.

Gillespie was never in his match, losing to Orange's Jamie Harris 16-6 for his second defeat of the season.

In the consolation round, Salem's Luqman Wade (112), Martinsville's Cory Walton (125), Carroll County's Chris Dillon (140) and Lord Botetourt's Brian Anderson (152) were Timesland wrestlers finishing third.

Chris Dillon was unbeaten coming into tournament action this weekend, but, by virtue of the draw, he landed in a strong bracket and was beaten by Orange's Jamie Harris 13-5 in the semifinals. He easily won two consolation-round matches.

Wade made the state tournament for the second straight year and won his match in overtime. "I thought I had a chance to win, but it was a tough weight bracket," said the Salem junior.

Walton lost 7-6 in the first round, then bounced back to win four straight in the consolation bracket. "I think I was fatigued from the ride down here in that first match," said Walton, who got a quick pin for third place.

Brian Proctor, a senior at William Byrd, had beaten Anderson for the Region III title last week, but lost in the district and Big Orange meets. In the 152-pound consolation final Saturday, Anderson let Proctor escape in the final period to fall behind 1-0, then rallied by getting a point for his opponents' unnecessary roughness and a last-second takedown.

"It was sort of risky, but I do better on my feet," said Anderson, a junior. "A lot of times in this tournament I've let people up and gotten a takedown."
