TWO KILLED IN COLLISION OF NS COAL TRAIN, CAR

Two people were killed and a 3-year-old girl seriously injured when their car was struck by a Norfolk Southern coal train, authorities said Saturday.

Deborah Ann High, 23, of Port Republic and Charles Jeffrey Vest, 32, of Grottoes, were dead when rescuers arrived at the scene.

Tabatha Lynn High, 3, was flown by helicopter to the University of Virginia Hospital where she was in serious condition with head and neck injuries Saturday night, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Officials said High drove onto the tracks from a private driveway near Virginia Route 340 in Linwood about 5 p.m.

Engineer Robert Winter, of Salem, told police he braked but could not stop before hitting the car. The car was dragged about a half-mile.

The northbound train with 55 loaded cars was northbound on Norfolk and Western tracks.

Police said no charges were filed and none were expected.

Police could not say if Tabatha High, Deborah High's daughter, was strapped into a car seat found near the car. - Associated Press
