RAFFLE FAILS TO PRODUCE PROFITS FOR MEMORIAL

An Alexandria receptionist won a $1 million luxury home in a raffle intended to raise money for a memorial to women in the military, but the promotion barely broke even.

Rene Ferlet, 36, learned Saturday that she held the winning ticket for a luxurious home in a drawing sponsored by the Women in Military Service for America Foundation.

Proceeds from the raffle were to have gone toward a memorial to be built at Arlington National Cemetery honoring the contributions of women in the military.

But only 50,000 tickets were sold instead of the 250,000 expected. At $25 a ticket, organizers said they will barely cover expenses.

A foundation spokesman said the federal tax on the house would be in the 28 percent range, or about $280,000, but offered the new owners the consolation: The donated services of a tax adviser come with the house. - Associated Press
