THREE DIE FOLLOWING TRAIN-CAR COLLISION

A 2-year-old girl died Sunday from injuries suffered when the car she was riding in was struck by a Norfolk Southern coal train. The girl's mother and a man were killed in the crash, authorities said.

Deborah Ann High, 23, of Port Republic, and Charles Jeffrey Vest, 32, of Grottoes, were dead when rescuers arrived at the scene Saturday.

Tabatha Lynn High, 2, was flown by helicopter to the University of Virginia Hospital where she died at 4:26 a.m. Sunday, said Abraham Segres.

Deborah High drove onto the tracks from a driveway in Linwood about 5 p.m. Saturday. Engineer Robert Winter of Salem told police he braked but could not stop before hitting the car. - Associated Press
