GIRL, 2, THIRD TO DIE IN CAR-TRAIN ACCIDENT

A 2-year-old girl died from injuries suffered when the car she was riding in was struck by a Norfolk Southern coal train.

The girl's mother and a man were killed immediately in the crash Saturday, authorities said.

Deborah Ann High, 23, of Port Republic and Charles Jeffrey Vest, 32, of Grottoes, were dead when rescuers arrived at the scene Saturday.

Tabatha Lynn High, 2, was flown by helicopter to the University of Virginia Hospital where she died at 4:26 a.m. Sunday, said Abraham Segres, administrator on call Sunday at the hospital.

High drove onto the tracks from a private driveway near Linwood about 5 p.m.

Engineer Robert Winter of Salem told police he braked but could not stop before hitting the car. The car was dragged about a half-mile.

Police said no charges have been filed and none are expected.
