WHITAKER EXPORT PLAN WINS FOR UVA TEAM

An export proposal developed for Roanoke's Fred Whitaker Co. won a prize for a three-member student research team from the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration. The team won a Governor's Award for Excellence in international market planning. Students analyzed international market opportunities for Whitaker, a maker of dye for yarns used in carpet manufacturing.

Three other student teams from Virginia Tech, James Madison and George Mason universities won the Governor's Award for foreign market studies.

The Whitaker plant has dyed yarn for a carpet maker exporting to Australia and shipments probably will be expanded to Japan, said Norman Hall, planning director for the company.
