Federal-Mogul Corp., with an engine bearings plant in Blacksburg, has reported a 72 percent drop in profits last year. The Southfield, Mich., company said 1990 sales rose 4.6 percent from 1989, to $1.1 billion, but net earnings fell to $9.2 million, or 20 cents a share, from $33.4 million, or $1.26 a share. Fourth-quarter sales rose 15.9 percent to $289.9 million but the company reported a $7.5 million loss, compared to a profit of $2 million a year earlier.

> Biological Monitoring Inc., a Blacksburg environmental consultant, has received a Small Business Innovative Research grant from the National Science Foundation to fund research in the use of fish and computers to monitor water quality. The first phase of the grant is worth $50,000.

A Bristol printer has filed for protection from creditors in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Roanoke. Quality Printers Inc., headed by Donald E. Miller, filed for reorganization, listing debt of $1 million and assets of $1.2 million.
