The state Department of Waste Management says an old calcium carbide dump site, pinpointed about a mile southeast of Ivanhoe, has a moderate potential for nearby ground and surface water contamination and a high potential for soil contamination at the site itself.
Cleanup work was completed just last year on polychlorinated biphenyl contamination from stored batteries left behind when the community's major employer, National Carbide, closed its plant there more than 20 years ago.
The 3-acre dump is in a deep ravine where National Carbide is supposed to have discarded calcium carbide and other waste products. Some of the mounds of waste are 15 feet high and 10 feet wide.
