LOCAL ROADS INCLUDED IN PAVEMENT STUDY

Twelve primary and interstate highways, including two in Southwest Virginia, will be in a pavement performance study to help show how to build longer-lasting roads.

More than 1,000 sites are being studied nationwide.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and the Washington, D.C.-based Strategic Highway Research Program are conducting the 20-year study. Two of the test sites are a section of U.S. 23 in Norton, which is about two miles north of Virginia 89, and a section of U.S. 19 in Richlands, which is a half-mile south of Virginia 644.

The sites average a quarter-mile in length and will be monitored for two decades to see how the pavement stands up to traffic and weather. - Southwest bureau
