Barbie Burton, 1, and Bridget Burton, 3, were killed in the blaze, Virginia Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Chase Sargent said Monday. Ashley Burton, 2, was in critical condition on a respirator at Norfolk General hospital, fire and hospital spokesmen said.
Firefighters broke through walls of flame and heavy smoke about 4:45 p.m., Sargent said. The children's mother was not at home and there were no other adults in the trailer, he said.
Neighbors reported the blaze, he said.
Firefighters reached Barbie Burton first, strapped in a walker in the trailer's main hall. Firefighters working from the back of the trailer found the other two children lying on a bed, Sargent said. He said firefighters reached all three within about four minutes.
Sargent said the fire is under investigation but does not appear suspicious. The mother, whose name was not available Monday night, could face neglect or other charges in the blaze, authorities said.
