GOVERNOR THREATENS SOME BUDGET VETOES

Gov. Douglas Wilder indicated Tuesday that he will veto some items in the budget passed by the General Assembly to close a $2.2 billion revenue gap.

Wilder said he had strongly objected to several spending items that still ended up in the budget approved last week. They include money for a copy of the historic ship Susan Constant, a building renovation at Clinch Valley College in Wise, and an advanced-studies center at the University of Virginia.

"I'm going to try to be as consistent as possible," Wilder said in an interview. "It doesn't make any sense to say something and point it out and then have the public almost agree with you and then you say, well . . ."
