Syeed was born in Indian-occupied Kashmir. A political activist, he was imprisoned and tortured by the Indian government when he joined the Kashmiri national movement to seek the implementation of United Nations resolutions that obligated India to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir.
Since his arrival in the United States, Syeed has been active in Muslim affairs. He is editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences and general secretary of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists.
