ISLAMIC LEADER WILL DELIVER W&L SPEECH

Sayyid Muhammad Syeed, founding president of the Islamic Society of North America, will speak at Washington and Lee University at 8 p.m. Thursday on the emergence of Islam in the United States.

The talk, in room 327 of the Commerce School, is open to the public.

Syeed was born in Indian-occupied Kashmir. A political activist, he was imprisoned and tortured by the Indian government when he joined the Kashmiri national movement to seek the implementation of United Nations resolutions that obligated India to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir.

Since his arrival in the United States, Syeed has been active in Muslim affairs. He is editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Islamic Social Sciences and general secretary of the Association of Muslim Social Scientists.
