TROOPER'S CRUISER RAMMED AFTER CHASE/

A 47-year-old Wythe County man was charged with driving under the influence Tuesday after a state police vehicle was rammed twice, authorities said.

John Robert Maxey of Route 2, Rural Retreat, was being held at the Smyth County Jail in Marion under a $2,500 bond pending a hearing set for April 11.

He was arrested after a trooper and Smyth County deputy pursued an erratically driven car on back roads in the Rural Retreat area near the Smyth-Wythe county border.

The car was stopped when the deputy's car got in front of it, but the driver then backed it up twice into the car being driven by Trooper D.L. Price. The trooper was not hurt.
