The tentative cuts - mostly for capital projects - bring the county budget closer to balance, but the supervisors will need to find another $1.2 million to cut, or the same amount in new revenues, before it's over.
The largest cut agreed to in a Monday night work session was in spending on the new landfill.
The supervisors agreed to set aside $300,000 less in next year's budget than they had hoped to for the landfill.
Under an initial proposal for next year, the county would have put $1.2 million in new funds toward building the landfill. Now, that figure will be closer to $900,000.
By the time it's completed in 1993, the landfill is expected to cost about $3.6 million. Up until now, the county has set aside $1.4 million for the project.
The supervisors also dropped a plan to set aside $200,000 next year for an enhanced 911 emergency system. County officials said they will look at options for a telephone users' surcharge to finance that project.
Another $100,000 was taken from funds being saved for the county's reassessment in 1995. The county will need more than half a million dollars by that year. So far, the supervisors have saved $100,000.
The rest was cut from the following areas:
$70,000 for a planned renovation to the animal shelter.
$60,000 for a new roof at the health department.
$33,000 for new recycling bins.
$25,000 for architectural plans at the county jail.
$20,000 for storage in the circuit court clerk's office.
$16,000 for improvements to eight county recreation fields.
The supervisors will continue working on the budget on Monday.
