HUFFMAN TOO STRONG FOR PH GIRLS

Lottie Huffman played as if it was her final home game - which it was.

The senior guard/forward turned in the game of her life Tuesday night for Franklin County, leading the Eagles to a 51-41 victory over Patrick Henry in the first round of the Roanoke Valley District girls' basketball tournament.

Huffman fired in 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, had 10 assists and collected 17 steals as the Eagles (10-11) advanced to a 6:30 p.m. game Thursday at Patrick Henry against Pulaski County.

William Fleming will meet Cave Spring in the other game.

Kim Saunders had 19 points for Patrick Henry.

\ Mountain Empire\ Top-seeded Bland got by eighth-seeded Narrows 65-58 in the first round of the district tournament at Christiansburg High School.

In the second game, Fort Chiswell also advanced, pulling away for a 74-61 victory over Galax.

Travis Munsey scored 21 points and Patrick Smith 20 in Bland's win. David King added 11. Jeff Dent had 20 points to lead Narrows.

Bland will play the winner of today's Grayson County-Shawsville game, and Fort Chiswell will play the Floyd-Auburn winner. Semifinal action begins Friday night.
