HIGH-SPEED TRAIN PLAN MAY INCLUDE VIRGINIA

Gov. Douglas Wilder has reportedly told Congress any high-speed train linking Washington with Boston should also extend south to Richmond or Hampton Roads.

A 20-page report outlining Wilder's priorities for Congress this year was obtained by The Richmond News Leader.

Virginia Secretary of Transportation John Milliken said Sen. Daniel Moynihan, D-N.Y., is considering introducing a bill to study the feasibility of high-speed rail service between Boston and Washington.

Virginia officials would like to see the study extended to include Richmond and Hampton Roads, Milliken said.

"I think we've got a fairly good case," he said.

Milliken pointed to a high volume of passenger traffic and density of population, as well as the Tidewater port's role in moving freight throughout the eastern United States.
