POLICE INVESTIGATE TWO CONVENIENCE STORE HOLDUP TRIES

Roanoke police are investigating a robbery and an attempted robbery of two convenience stores that happened within an hour of each other Tuesday night.

Both incidents involved a struggle or a standoff between store clerks and the robber.

At 10:24 p.m., a man entered the Snappy Food Store on the 600 block of Liberty Road Northeast, pulled a long knife and asked for $100, police said.

The clerk, Ronnie L. Daniel, grabbed a metal pipe. After a short standoff, the robber fled with a pack of cigarettes and $2 of his own money that he had tendered for the cigarettes, police said.

At 11:13 p.m., a man entered the Seven-Eleven store on Bennington Street Southeast. After placing a beer on the counter, he demanded money from the clerk and came around the counter.

But after a brief struggle, the man fled without taking any money.

Police said today that they have not determined if the same man was involved in both robberies.
