PARTY AKIMBO PLAYS BLACKSBURG FRIDAY

Funk-rock dance band Party Akimbo is a metal monster that's clawing its way up and down the East Coast, champing at the bit for recognition. And the group is hoping to find it in Blacksburg.

The progressive Washington band features Animal Logic members John White on lead guitar and Rob Gould with lead vocals, bassist Vernon Hawkins, a founding member of Sex on TV, and drummer John Hage from New Potato Caboose.

Animal Logic was formed in 1985. It toured the mid-Atlantic opening for acts such as The Smithereens and Eek-a-Mouse and released three cassettes and two records.

Then the group lost name rights in 1988 to ex-Police drummer Stewart Copeland and Stanley Clarke, who had trademarked their own Animal Logic. Party Akimbo was born in `89 when Hawkins joined on as the new bassist.

Party Akimbo jams out a streamlined, eclectic mix of funk and rock that includes cover renditions of Chuck Brown, Grace Jones and Neil Young. The group's pumped-up cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle" has been said to justify the song's existence and hearing it is worth the price of admission.

It's 1990 release was "Somewhere East of L.A.," which has received positive attention, and the group has its own promotion company, Primal Productions Inc. in Alexandria.

Party Akimbo will perform tonight at South Main Cafe in Blacksburg. Call 951-8202 for information.
