VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH
Caroline Self has been a volunteer with the Roanoke AIDS Project since July 1988. She serves as a "buddy" for two people - an 8-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man.
Self, a graduate student, did her counseling practicum with the AIDS project and has continued her internship there. She has helped with buddy training and has served on various panels on AIDS education.
She also provides free counseling to Roanoke-area clients of the AIDS project.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Positions open this month include:
Librarian - Planned Parenthood. The organization needs a volunteer with library experience, organization and human relations skills to maintain and expand its resource center. An orientation session is provided at the office, which is accessible to the handicapped. For more information, call Jeanie Seay at 362-3968.
Activity volunteer - American Red Cross. A health-conscious volunteer is needed to take blood pressure readings at businesses and shopping malls. Training is provided and the time commitment is negotiable. For more information, call Melissa Register at 985-3525.
Medical records volunteer - Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Clerical skills are needed for this position, which involves sorting and filing information. Volunteers, who must be at least 18 years old, may opt for the morning (9 a.m. to noon) or afternoon (1-4 p.m.) shift Monday through Friday. For more information, call Cely Mangus at 981-7121.
Court monitor - Mothers Against Drunk Driving. A volunteer who is free during the day is needed to observe drunken-driving cases in Roanoke-area courts. Orientation will be provided and the sites are accessible to the handicapped. For more information, call Cathy Schuchman at 985-0566 during evening hours.
Foster parent - Connections. Weekend and full-time foster parents, at least 25 years old, are needed to provide homes, guidance and love to youths ages 11 and older. Pre-service training of one class per week for six weeks is provided. For more information, call Lynn Stanley at 342-0411.
Donor support volunteer - American Red Cross. Volunteers who enjoy greeting and working with the public are needed to help in the blood donor program with registration, food, support and assistance to the nurses. Orientation is provided on the first Monday of the month for the 3 1/2- to five-hour shifts, Tuesday through Friday. For more information, call Melissa Register at 985-3525.
Individual and couple volunteers - Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Roanoke Valley. Adults are needed to make at least a one-year commitment to spend at least three hours weekly serving as role models to children ages 7-13. Orientation and supervision are provided.
